Completing Your Independent Reading Project


Independent Book Reports

Sack Lunch Book Report Requirements

All of the "sandwich" parts will be given out in class!
Bread - top slice
On the top slice, write the title and author. Don’t forget to underline the title. (5 pts.)

Lettuce
Describe the setting or settings in the book. Include time, place, etc. Musr be at least 100 words(5 pts.)

Tomato
On the tomato, choose one character trait that best describes the main character and explain using details from the text. Must be at least 100 words.(15 pts.)

Cheese
Describe your favorite scene or part of the book for others. Must be at least 100 words(15 pts.)

Meat
On the meat, write a brief explanation of the major action (plot), including the turning point and how the story finally ends. (This can be a numbered list or paragraph form, but it must be at least 150 words!) (20 pts.)

Onion (10 pts.)
On the onion, write why you did or did not like the book. Must be at least 100 words!

Bread – bottom slice (10 pts.)
On the bottom slice, draw a color picture of a scene from your book.
"If You Like"(10 pts.)
Use the half sheet given to answer the sentence starter I provide.

Now, create a list of at least 5 things that fill up the front of the bag.


Chips (16 pts.)
On each chip, write a question that can be answered by someone once they read your book. Remember, the goal of this is to convince people that they should read the book. Make the questions interesting so others are curious and want to pick up your book! No YES/NO questions are permitted.

Cookie (10 pts.)
Around the edge of the cookie, tell about the funniest part of the book, or the part that made you smile the most. Or, you can write about the saddest part of the book. Finish the cookie with a smile or a frown. Must be at least 100 words

Neatness, creativity, spelling, punctuation, and effort count! Please refer to the scoring scale (rubric) distributed in class.

What kind of books can I read?



    Books must be from ONE of the following categories AND at or above a lexile level of 800.

      How can I check the reading level of my book?

      If you look at the lexile chart to the right, you will see the approximate breakdown of reading levels. You can check the reading level of your book by clicking here. If your book does not appear in the Lexile database, please let be physically see your book ASAP.

      What are my deadlines for this project?

      book must be selected and approved by:  November 8th, 2012


      book must be read by : monday, December 10th, 2012


      Assignment of project parts begins:December 10th


      Note: This project is "chunked", or split up into small parts. Those "chunks" start getting assigned as soon a deadline for reading the book has passed.If students keep up with the deadlines for the "chunks", they will have the entire project completed on time.
      There is also a written short essay portion of this assignment as well. Students will be permitted to use both their book and "sandwich" to assist them with several critical reading MSA-style questions based on the text. (see below for more info)



      Independent Book Report - Part 2


      Part two consists of an in-class timed essay exam, where students will be permitted to use their novels and book report "sandwich" parts to demonstrate their understanding of more complex ideas found in the book. On the day of the exam, students will be permitted to choose from a list of essay questions. (For example, students will be given a list of essay questions and asked to select 3 to answer.)
